VENUES OF ENERGY : a Collection by JENNY LONG

  • the Long Gallery + Studios (map)

Join us for the Opening Night Thursday, February 23rd from 5-7pm for Jenny Long’s solo show “Venues of Energy”. This collection spans the 23 years of Long’s painting career — each selected piece is reflective of the growth, memories & life events tied to each that she explores within these venues of energy. It shows her roots in abstraction from studies in her BFA Degree, where she fell in love with the power of colour and the freedom to trust her intuitive voice in combination with her passion for portraiture. The latest series of work shows her returned interest to more collage elements, graffiti influence and drawing while still incorporating her love of textural, bold acrylic fundamental elements.

Show runs until March 18th.

DUO EXHIBIT BETWEEN PAINTER AND PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTIST

TWO DISTINCT MEDIUMS & THE FEMININE DIVINE

We are pleased to announce the first show of the 2022 season, FRAME OF REFERENCE, opening Thursday, February 10th. The show is a collaboration between Jenny Long, abstract painter/owner of Long Gallery and award-winning photographer, Robert Kenney.

Gallery hours are Wed. through Sat. 11:30am to 4:30pm

Sundays from Noon to 4:00 pm

Thursday evening until 7pm

Artists will be in attendance all Thursdays from 3:30-7pm and all Sundays from noon to 4:00pm to expand on this very special body of work for gallery visitors.

Robert specializes in Wetplate Collodian, an early 19th century photographic process. The plates are handmade, fickle, messy and challenging to control. The resultant images are raw and revelatory.

Jenny was delighted to be able to select a few of her favorite photographs of Robert’s to create her abstract nudes as the inspiration to create her paintings, letting the language be fresh and open yet derived from his very felt and sophisticated work. She has been wanting to do a show of this nature since she moved back to Penticton in 2003, and is honored to be able to bring it to life with the caliber of Robert’s work.

Robert comments: “This show is about representing the female body in a way that transcends its immediate social and politicized implications and translations into recognition of the sublime. It is an invitation to see past social and cultural conditionings and to explore the intuition, mystery, sensuality, creation and oneness of the feminine. This show is sharing two distinct mediums with a common goal and thread joining to create artwork from a place that transcends time and space. The relationship is one of a mutual recognition of interests, process and play.”

Robert has received many awards over the years for a variety of work most notably in fashion, travel, portraiture and advertising. One of particular note is the 2019 Vancouver Fashion Week Recognition Award for his contribution to fashion in Vancouver over the past 25 years. Robert moved to the South Okanagan in 2020 and is a resident artist proudly represented by Jenny and the Long Gallery.

Add to that the use of barn boards, fruit picking ladders, weathered fences, lichen covered boards I find on my hikes around Penticton.

Outside the Lines

Artist in attendance, appies + wine available and most importantly NEW, exciting artwork by Terry. The event is free of charge, open to all ages and is the first big exhibit of 2020 for the gallery.

“Outside the Lines” sprang out of Neil’s recent experiments with colour theory, abstraction and impressionism. The paintings tell a story, but they may be a different story for different people. This work conveys an essence but leaves room for the viewer to fill in the blanks.

Neil comments, “I believe that it is okay to colour outside the lines, paint what I feel and not what I see, to break rules, to tell a story that not everyone will hear the same way.”
